Correcting Jaw Irregularities for Better Function and Appearance
Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a specialized procedure used to reposition one or both jaws in cases where traditional braces alone cannot achieve the desired outcome. While orthodontics focuses on straightening teeth, orthognathic surgery aims to straighten the jaws, correcting significant facial and jaw irregularities.
When combined with orthodontic treatment, orthognathic surgery offers the best results, as the repositioned jaws also move the teeth into their ideal position. The goal is to improve both jaw function and facial appearance, enhancing your overall smile and bite.
What to Expect: A Step-by-Step Process
- Pre-Surgical Orthodontics:
Before surgery, Dr. Robert Iezman will move your teeth into a new position using braces, ensuring they will fit together properly when your jaws are realigned. This phase typically lasts between 6-18 months, during which you will visit regularly for adjustments and evaluations. While your bite may seem worse during this phase, rest assured that the goal is to position the teeth so they will align correctly after the surgery.
- Surgical Procedure:
Orthognathic surgery is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and typically lasts several hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure. In lower jaw surgery, the rear portion of the jawbone is separated, and the tooth-bearing portion is moved forward or backward. In upper jaw surgery, the jaw can be repositioned, raised, or lowered as needed.
In some cases, the surgeon may need to separate the jaws into parts and add or remove bone to achieve the proper alignment. If necessary, other facial bones contributing to the imbalance may also be repositioned. Most incisions are made inside the mouth to avoid visible scars, though external incisions may be made discreetly in natural skin creases.
Healing After Surgery: What You Need to Know
Recovery from orthognathic surgery is a gradual process. While you should be able to return to work or school within 2 weeks, you may experience some swelling and a change in appearance as your jaws heal. It’s natural for family and friends to notice the difference, but they’ll quickly adjust to your “new” look.
Post-surgery, you will have follow-up visits with both your surgeon and Dr. Iezman to monitor your healing. The initial healing phase lasts about 6 weeks, but complete recovery takes 9 to 12 months. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is critical during this phase, and your care team will guide you on the best practices and may recommend special oral care devices.
Post-Surgical Orthodontic Treatment: About 4 to 8 weeks after surgery, we will begin fine-tuning your bite with additional adjustments. In most cases, braces will be removed within 6 to 12 months following surgery, completing your treatment.
