At What Age Should a Child First Visit the Pediatric Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that most children have an orthodontic screening by age 7. Early screening allows Dr. Robert Iezman to evaluate whether early orthodontic treatment is necessary and determine the best timing for care. Many local dentists are trained to identify orthodontic concerns early and may refer you to our office before age 7.
Why Are Children Evaluated at Such an Early Age?
Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent developing problems from worsening and becoming more difficult or invasive to correct later in life. By addressing concerns early, we can guide the growth of the jaw, correct bite issues, and prepare for the arrival of permanent teeth.
Here are some benefits of early orthodontic treatment:
- Jaw growth guidance: Correcting bite problems and creating space for incoming teeth.
- Arch expansion: Regulating the width of the upper and lower dental arches.
- Reduced need for extractions: Preventing the need for permanent tooth extractions.
- Prevention of impacted teeth: Minimizing the risk of permanent teeth becoming impacted.
- Easier future treatment: Early intervention simplifies later treatment after permanent teeth emerge.
Does Early Orthodontic Treatment Benefit All Children?
While early treatment can be beneficial, it doesn’t apply to every child. Some orthodontic issues can be corrected during the teen years, after all the permanent teeth have erupted, without the need for early intervention. In some cases, skeletal issues should only be addressed once growth has advanced or completed.
If Dr. Iezman determines that early treatment is not necessary, your child will be placed in our Orthodontic Observation Program to monitor their development.
What Is the Orthodontic Observation Program?
The Orthodontic Observation Program is for children who aren’t yet ready for treatment but still need their dental and jaw development monitored. This program tracks the progress of baby teeth falling out and permanent teeth coming in. In some cases, early removal of baby teeth can prevent future issues and reduce the time required for braces.
- Observation Visits: Typically every 6-12 months to track development.
- Early Interventions: Removing baby teeth when needed to simplify future treatment.
- Optimized Timing: Helps Dr. Iezman determine the best time to start treatment for the best result.
What Are the Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment Beyond a Beautiful Smile?
In addition to achieving a stunning smile, orthodontic treatment can also improve the function of the bite and teeth, making it easier to clean your teeth and gums, prevent wear, and increase the longevity of natural teeth.
Will Early Treatment Eliminate the Need for Braces for Kids in the Teen Years?
Early treatment aims to address significant issues before all permanent teeth have erupted. This can help ensure that the remaining permanent teeth come in properly. However, early treatment often requires a second phase of treatment in the teen years to fully correct alignment and bite issues once all the permanent teeth are in place. This second phase may involve Invisalign or braces.
Do We Still Need to See Our Family Dentist During Orthodontic Treatment?
Yes, continuing to see your family dentist during orthodontic treatment is crucial. Braces and other orthodontic appliances make it more challenging to keep your teeth and gums clean. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are essential for maintaining optimal oral health throughout your treatment.
- Recommended Check-Ups: Regular visits every 2-6 months, depending on your individual needs.
