Busting Common Invisalign Myths

Being told you need orthodontic treatment, or simply deciding you want a straighter smile, can feel like a big step. For self-conscious teens and busy professionals alike, a mouth full of metal is not always appealing. That is why so many people overlook a nearly invisible alternative: Invisalign clear aligners. Some write it off over worries about cost or results, so let us clear up a few common myths.

Myth: Invisalign Costs Much More Than Braces

In many cases, Invisalign is comparable in cost to traditional braces. And at Berkeley Family Orthodontics, you have Dr. Iezman, an orthodontic specialist with 38 years of experience, guiding your treatment from start to finish. That expert oversight matters, especially with so much “do-it-yourself” orthodontics being marketed online that can lead to serious, lasting dental problems. See our financing page for our no-interest payment options.

How Invisalign Actually Works

Your aligners are custom-made for your mouth. We use advanced 3D digital scanning to create an exact model of your teeth, then design a series of aligners that gradually move your teeth into position. Visits are usually shorter and less frequent than with braces, and many patients notice a difference well before treatment ends. Most treatments finish in about a year, though this varies from person to person.

Myth: You Lose Your Freedom

Actually, the opposite is true. Because the aligners are removable, you can take them out to eat, play sports, and clean your teeth, which makes brushing and flossing far easier than with braces. Just remember to clean your teeth and aligners after meals, and to wear your aligners at least 20 to 22 hours a day. And yes, your orthodontist can tell if you have not been keeping up.

Myth: Invisalign Doesn’t Work as Well as Braces

With today’s technology, clear aligners can be just as effective as braces for many cases when worn as directed. Plenty of patients finish on time, or even early. The comfort and convenience often make it easier to stick with treatment, which supports a great result. That said, not everyone is a candidate, and for some complex cases braces are the better tool. Dr. Iezman will give you an honest recommendation.
